Pack pounds War Eagles
Lufkin showcases big-play ability en route to 51-7 win

THE WOODLANDS — The Lufkin Panthers' run of six straight district titles may have come to an end just one week earlier with a loss to The Woodlands Highlanders, but on Friday night, the Panthers looked like a team that is ready to make some noise in the playoffs.

Lufkin's defense kept the War Eagles' usually potent offense off balance the entire night and the Panthers' offense showed its big-play ability as they pounded Oak Ridge 51-7 at Woodforest Bank Stadium.

The win sealed the top seed in Division II for the Panthers and set up another matchup with Klein. That game will be played in Klein with a time and date to be determined later today.

"We had to get over the hangover from The Woodlands game," Lufkin head coach John Outlaw said. "We needed to get out of town, get away from everything and come out and play some good football. We did that tonight and that's something we needed."

Lufkin's defense held Oak Ridge to 132 total yards. Oak Ridge failed to complete any of its 12 pass attempts and averaged just three yards on its 44 rushing attempts.

The War Eagles were held to four first-half yards and much of the damage came when the game was already well in hand.

Lufkin held Oak Ridge's top playmakers — Torrian Oakley and Ryan Cyr — in check most of the night.

Oakley ran for 66 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries while Cyr ran for 22 yards on 21 carries. Cyr also failed to complete a pass in his 12 attempts.

"We needed to get back to playing good defense because we haven't played well on that side of the ball in three weeks," Outlaw said. "That's what we're capable of doing when we come out firing on all cylinders."

Lufkin had an efficient offensive night that was led by Deauntre Smiley and Jamarcus Walker.

Smiley completed 13 of 21 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown and ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Walker was held to 33 yards on 12 carries but had three touchdowns, including a 95-yard kickoff return to answer Oak Ridge's only score of the night.

The Panthers had five scoring drives that lasted less than one minute and also had another touchdown on Walker's long return.

"We had some big plays on offense tonight," Outlaw said. "We controlled the ball for most of the first half and got some big plays in the second half that broke it open a little more."

Lufkin got on the board first as Walker capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 12-yard run that put the Panthers up 7-0 with 3:51 left in the first quarter.

Lufkin extended that lead to two scores when Will Fenley connected on a 35-yard field goal to make the score 10-0 with 3:52 left in the first half.

The Panthers then seized control of the game with two touchdowns in a 25-second span near the end of the first half.

After Lufkin's defense pinned Oak Ridge deep in its own territory, the Panthers took over at the War Eagles 29 yard line.

Four plays later, Smiley scored on a 6-yard run that extended the Panthers' lead to 16-0 with 1:12 remaining.

The Panthers then forced an Oak Ridge fumble and recovered it at the War Eagles' 4 yard line.

On the next play, Walker ran in from four yards out and Quinn Trimble caught the two-point conversion pass from Smiley to give the Panthers a 24-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the first half.

While the Panthers' offense put up 24 points in the first half, it was the defense that seized control of the game.

Oak Ridge, whose offense had put up points throughout the year, was held to a total of 4 yards on 19 plays. They were forced into four punts and a turnover that led to a Lufkin score.

Meanwhile, Lufkin managed to control the flow of the game on offense as it ran 40 plays while holding the ball for 15:02.

Smiley finished the first half with 100 yards on 12-of-20 passing. Walker was held to 33 yards on 12 carries but had two touchdowns.

Oak Ridge attempted to get back in the game early in the second half as Oakley scored on a 33-yard run on a trick play to make it 24-7.

That momentum didn't last long as Walker raced past the Oak Ridge coverage team and juked the kicker to score on a 95-yard return that made it 31-7,

Oak Ridge turned the ball over on its next possession and Lufkin scored on the following play as Trimble made a nice play on a 29-yard touchdown pass that made the score 37-7.

Lufkin scored again on its next offensive play as Smiley scored on a 58-yard run to make it 44-7.

The Panthers added their final score as Arthur Tinz connected with Donte Finley for an 82-yard touchdown that made the final 51-7.

Lufkin (8-2, 4-1) will face Klein in the opening round of the playoffs next week. Oak Ridge (5-2, 2-3) opens the playoffs against Klein Collins, also with a time and site to be determined.
