GROVETON — Groveton got a big game from running back Willie Washington and rallied from an early 20-0 deficit to Centerville to take a 28-26 win here Friday night in the season finale for both teams.
Centerville jumped on top early, scoring three times in the first period.
The first score came on a 7-yard run from Seth Mahaffey, capping an 8-play, 59-yard drive. A 12-yard scoring run from Jonathan Cloud put the Tigers up 13-0 with 6:59 left in the first period.
Quarterback Michael Gwosdz hit Tyler Peterson for a 68-yard scoring strike late in the first period, upping the lead to 20-0.
Groveton answered with Calvin James returning the ensuing kickoff 79 yards to make it 20-6.
Neither team scored in the second period but the Indians got back in the contest with a pair of third-quarter scores.
Washington scored on a 45-yard run and quarterback Calvin Williams scored on a 14-yard run. Washington ran in the two-point try after Williams' score to tie the game 20-20.
The Indians took the lead in the fourth with Washington scoring on a 15-yard run, and then adding the two-point play to make it 28-20.
Centerville scored on a 2-yard run with 2:14 remaining, but missed the two-point try and fell short, 28-26.
Groveton finished the season at 3-7 overall and 2-3 in district. Centerville finished at 2-8 and 1-4.
