WACO - Both the Angelina College Roadrunners and Lady Roadrunners picked up wins in the opening day of the McLennan Classic in Waco on Friday, although each team took a slightly different route to victory.
The No. 19 Lady Roadrunners rolled to an easier-than-the-final-score-showed 86-76 win over Weatherford College, while the Roadrunners had to battle back from double-digits down in the game's final moments to knock off Hill College 76-74.
Today's games will feature each AC team facing McLennan's teams, with the Lady Roadrunners scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. and the Roadrunners following at 8 p.m.
No. 19 Lady Roadrunners 86, Weatherford College 76 — AC's Lady Roadrunners moved to 2-0 on the young season with an 86-76 win over the Lady Coyotes. Lady 'Runner Marcy Robinson got the job done on both ends of the floor, scoring 19 points and collecting six steals. Donia Naylor added 18 points and 10 rebounds, Tiara George finished with 12 points and 10 boards and Tyeka Ranton added 11 points in the win.
Weatherford's Kasandra Foreman offered a huge night in a losing cause, finishing with 25 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Roadrunners 76, Hill College 74 — AC's men rallied from 16 points down, including a 10-point deficit with just less than six minutes remaining in the game, to take down Hill College 76-72.
Adrick McKinney's two offensive rebounds and putbacks, combined with clutch three-pointers from Ron Steward, Joevoskie Mitchell and Takoby Jackson, allowed the 'Runners to take their first lead since early in the first half with just 2:36 to play. Julien Bouil then knocked down both ends of a 1-and-1 free throw situation with 12 seconds remaining, and the Roadrunners were able to hold off the Rebels' desperation attempts before the buzzer.
McKinney's 17 points and nine rebounds led the Roadrunners. Mitchell added 16 points, Jackson finished with 11 and Antonio Holmes chipped in 10 points off the bench to lead AC.
"At halftime, I told our guys the sign of a man is how he responds to adversity and pressure," AC head coach Todd Neighbors said. "They had enough pride to come out and fight back for a huge win, especially considering the number of freshmen we have on our roster."
Hill's Chris Kupets and De' Andre Simmons led the Rebels with 14 points each.
