NEW WAVERLY — New Waverly remained unbeaten in district play, scoring the first 30 points of the game and coasting to a 37-16 win over Groveton here Friday night.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-0) jumped ahead less than two minutes into the game as Tyren Watts scored from 24 yards out to make it 6-0 early.

After Groveton failed on a fourth-down play late in the first period, Watts broke a 91-yard run on the next play for a score and the Bulldogs were up 12-0.

New Waverly scored twice in the second quarter on a 2-yard run from Deremy Jones and an 8-yard run from Kevin Major to push the lead to 24-0 at halftime.

Watts, who ran for 190 yards on only six carries in the game, scored again in the third quarter, this time on a 74-yard run to up the lead to 30-0.

Groveton finally got on the board in the fourth quarter with Willie Washington scoring from 26 yards. Calvin Williams passed to Brent Wars for the two-point play to make it 30-8.

The Bulldogs scored on a 50-yard run from Major to make it 37-8.

Groveton added a late score on a 23-yard pass from Williams to Wars. Washington ran in the two-point try to make the final 37-16.

Washington led the Indians with 170 yards rushing and Wars, who saw his first action since breaking his collarbone in the first game of the season, ran for 74 yards on 18 attempts and caught the one TD pass for 23 yards.

Groveton (2-7, 1-3) will close out its season at home against Centerville on Friday.
