Bush league: Panthers pound College Park behind strong performance from Smiley

THE WOODLANDS — Even with a 6-1 record, the Lufkin Panthers spent much of the past week talking about playing up to their potential.

On Saturday afternoon, Deauntre "Bush" Smiley and the Panthers took a big step in the right direction.

Smiley accounted for 388 yards and five touchdowns and completed all of his 19 pass attempts as the Panthers rolled to a 51-20 win over the College Park Cavaliers at Woodforest Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"We spent this week working on some issues that we've had, and I'm proud of the way the kids came out and responded today," Lufkin head coach John Outlaw said. "We accepted our faults and learned from the bad things we've been doing. Now we have to keep on playing that way the rest of the year."

Smiley was perfect on the day passing as he was 19-of-19 passing for 239 yards and three scores. He was just as dangerous with his legs as he ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries.

"I'm almost in shock because I've never had a game like that where I completed all my passes," Smiley said. "The offensive line played great and my receivers caught everything I threw. They should get the credit."

Five different receivers had at least two catches for the Panthers, led by Quinn Trimble, who made six receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Arthur Tinz had five catches for 57 yards, and Earon Johnson caught a 23-yard touchdown pass.

Lufkin finished the game with 411 total yards of offense.

"Our offense needed that," Outlaw said. "We haven't been very consistent there. We moved the ball just about every time we touched it."

College Park also had a big day in yardage totals as it gained 430 total yards, including 319 on the ground. But Lufkin's defense came up with the big plays when it needed them as College Park scored on its first and last drives of the game but only had six other points.

Aaron Osborne led College Park with 125 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Paco Solano had 114 yards on 17 carries. Taylor Chaumet threw for 68 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 58 yards on 14 carries.

"Against this kind of offense you're usually going to give up some yards," Outlaw said. "But we did what we had to do by not giving up many points. If you take away that last touchdown, they only had 13, and with the way our offense played, that was more than enough."

After giving up an early touchdown, the Panthers dominated the final 23 minutes of the opening half.

Bush Smiley completed all 13 of his first-half attempts for 192 yards and three touchdowns, and Quinn Trimble had four catches for 72 yards and two scores. Lufkin gained a total of 239 first-half yards on its way to a 24-7 lead.

College Park got on the board first with the help of a 54-yard kickoff return by Tyler Chaumet. Three plays after that return, Aaron Osborne ran in a score from six yards out to give College Park a 7-0 lead.

That lead was short-lived as Lufkin matched down the field on its first possession, eventually getting on the board with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Smiley to Trimble.

Lufkin stopped College Park on its next three plays and Carrington Byndom made a key tackle when the Cavs attempted a fake punt.

Lufkin capitalized with a 33-yard Luis Garcia field goal that gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead.

The Panthers then used the big play to extend their lead as Smiley hit Trimble over the middle. Trimble then made some nice moves from there as he scored from 48 yards out to make it 17-7.

Lufkin got its final score of the first half when Smiley completed his 13th straight pass, this one from 23 yards out to a wide-open Earon Johnson that made it 24-7 at the break.

The Panthers picked up where they left off on the first play of the second half. College Park attempted a pooch kick to avoid a long return. However, Glenn Hunt took the short kick and returned it 70 yards for a score to make it 31-7.

College Park had the answer as it took just five plays to score on a 46-yard pass from Tyler Chaumet to Kevin Byers. The extra point failed, leaving the score at 31-13.

College Park had a chance to get back in the game when it recovered a short kickoff. However, Lufkin's Carrington Byndom ended that threat with an interception in the end zone.

Lufkin's offense took over from there as Smiley broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run that put the Pack on top 38-13 just three plays later. Lufkin extended that lead to 45-13 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Smiley scored from eight yards out to make it 45-13.

The Panthers' final score came when Hunt scored on a 12-yard run after a botched punt attempt by College Park.

The Cavaliers added the final score on the last play of the game as Chaumet found Chris Malott for a 22-yard score that made the final 51-20.

Lufkin (7-1, 3-0) will be back in action Friday as it hosts The Woodlands Highlanders.
