Lufkin is located in deep East Texas, about 15 miles from its sister paper, The Daily Sentinel in Nacogdoches. In 2003, The Lufkin Daily News was named the Best Selected Circulation Newspaper in a five state region by the Dallas Press Club, largely for its coverage of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Lufkin won the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1977 for stories about abuses in military recruiting and training.
