The Lufkin Daily News won the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1977 -- the highest award given in journalism -- for stories about abuses in military recruiting and training. Daily ciruclation is around 15,000, and Sunday circulation is about 17,000. The paper, founded in 1906, converted to morning publication in 1996.
