Jail administrator deals with Corrections Center operations

Your job: Captain jail administrator (one of two positions).

Louise Marshall has been a law enforcement officer for 30 years, the last three of which she has served as the Angelina County jail administrator.
 

Your employer: Angelina County Sheriff.

How long have you been in this job? Three years as jail administrator; total time in law enforcement, 30 years.

What are your normal working hours? Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but on call 24/7.

Your job duties: Provide supervision for Corrections Center, conduct new applicant interviews and background checks. Develop new procedures and ensure staff training. Review and evaluate all facets of Corrections Center operations and staff performance. Thorough understanding and working knowledge of all positions. Order and monitor usage of all expendable supplies. Monitor building maintenance and coordinate any repairs.

Conduct weekly/monthly tests of all security/safety mechanisms. Coordinate resolution of inmate grievances and any discipline problems. Coordinate prisoner transportation. Assign inmates to work details. Make quick decisions in potential life/death situations. Recognize potential litigious situations and take appropriate action to avoid liability for individuals and the county. Conduct periodic classification reviews of all prisoners and coordinate all overrides to the classification level.

Responsible for supervision of 53 corrections staff, four transport deputies and work details. Program development and evaluations. Planning and monitoring an annual budget. Vacation scheduling and time and attendance record keeping. Develop plans, coordinate activities and resolve problems with other agencies. Frequent meetings and contact with county government employees at all levels.

Complete investigations and report findings to the chief deputy regarding employee disciplinary problems. Coordinate inmate work release program. Conduct tours of Corrections Center by civic groups.

What do you like least about your job? Seeing young kids ruining their lives by repeatedly coming to jail.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing this job? Good question. I don't know.

When you were in high school, what did you think you would be doing now? Had no idea.

What would you like to be doing 10 years from now? Retired! Not going to happen, though.
