Religion is powerfully good

The Lufkin Daily News

Saturday, May 03, 2008

The desperation apparent in Ted's letter to the editor makes one wonder how the ink stays on the page and how the letters keep from jumping up to run madly around until falling to lie, withered and disenchanted in clumps and piles of meaningless script.

Some of us do not hold him at fault for these views while others of us would have him flogged for such a vulgar public display. Though they stand self-evident as discourteous, inconsiderate, inexperienced, and naïve, his comments reflect the distorted image of a soul without hope and as such can be a meaningful lesson to those who desire truth, strength, passion and purpose in their lives.

"Good" politics which may agree in every way with one's personal prejudices and opinions will bring only a mocking caricature of hope and that but for a very short time. At best, when left to our own devices, we may for a time and with a lot of luck "do no harm" but we have absolutely no chance to do lasting good without the willingness to sacrifice some of ourselves in the process. The ability and willingness to sacrifice oneself with no expectation of personal reward is the sign of a soul who has found his or her true, strong, and passionate purpose. Sometimes a sacrifice may look selfless with deeper examination revealing selfish and personal motives: "Guaranteed entrance into heaven with 70 or so virgins awaiting". Some also get caught in group mind sets of rage and rebellion thus becoming the muscle for a deadly world view as they kill, steal and destroy to satiate the spirit at source for that rampant carnage.

There are those however, who willingly put everything on the line for a cause to benefit others, sometimes just for one, at other times for millions. These people are humanity's heroes and heroines and we can follow the paths they trod and find liberty, dignity and hope for the future entwined with the footprints they leave behind. The costs may be maximum and blood may stain the path but in this world, such has been the price of freedom with its gifts of good "people things" like clean pure water, abundant nutritious good food to share around a common table, and worthwhile occupation for all before God and before man. On Earth, this looks to be a work yet in progress with Champions, detractors, and some outright hellish devils loosed here attempting to keep humanity in chains and misery.

The Champions tend toward the quiet type and will not be turned aside from what they know is right. The detractors when engaged can be noisy if not vicious, flailing and striking at anything of merit as they fight against that which they cannot see for a cause they fail to comprehend or understand.

Some of us, even further gone than Ted, were unable to retain our sanity without outside help in this dark and dreary world with its rank unfairness and suffering. Jesus did in fact come to our rescue, not in religion, but as our personal champion and friend. This he desires to do for all.

Religion, as it groups people together in pursuit of the two foremost "Christian" goals is powerfully good. Much benefit is accomplished for billions through this medium even as a fraction of its professed adherents bring unfortunate and unnecessary harm.

America is a wonderful lady, sent to Earth as a servant to bring liberty and justice. Her children are her most prized and valuable possession. She loves us dearly and yet has been willing to let us join her in sacrifice as she accomplishes her true, strong and passionate purpose. Some of us stand with her in the military as she valiantly battles back the forces of darkness which yet enslave mankind. She has always had to stand against forces from within as well as from without and by this she shows her undamped determination to continue her God-given quest, offering liberty and justice for all.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all of the military families who have offered their best for the only cause which will truly set men free. We love you.
