Corrigan-Camden opening playoffs against high-powered Kirbyville

The Lufkin Daily News

Thursday, November 12, 2009

The Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs know they will have their hands full when they open the playoffs against the Kirbyville Wildcats at Abe Martin Stadium tonight.

Kirbyville was the state runner-up in the Class 2A Division I playoffs last season. The Wildcats followed that up with an 8-2 record this year with the only losses coming to 3A teams West Orange-Stark and Jasper.

The Wildcats are also coming off a 29-26 win over Newton to wrap up another district title. But even with that impressive resume, Corrigan-Camden head coach Seven Armstrong said he expects his team to be ready for the challenge.

"We've got a big challenge in front of us, but at the same time, we think they've got a pretty big test too," Armstrong said. "Hopefully we can get rolling again and make a good run in the playoffs."

Corrigan-Camden has put together a strong season as well, and like Kirbyville the Bulldogs enter the postseason with an 8-2 record. That includes eight wins in nine games since an opening 40-21 loss to Newton.

Following a tough 37-34 loss to New Waverly, Corrigan-Camden has won its last three games over Groveton, Centerville and Trinity by a combined score of 151-25.

"We've done a good job of playing Corrigan football," Armstrong said. "Our running game has been working because our offensive line has been playing really well. We'll have to keep doing that if we're going to beat a good team like Kirbyville."

The winner of tonight's Class 2A Division I bi-district playoff game will take on Anahuac in the area round of the playoffs.

Kickoff for tonight's game at Abe Martin Stadium is set for 7:30.
