Lufkin Landscape Task Force preps for gala, auction

The Lufkin Daily News

Oy! The Lufkin Landscape Task Force is looking to a land down under as its theme for this year's gala.

Attendees of the 6th Annual Fall Festival and Auction will get a taste of the Australian outback with Aussie cuisine, wines and decor.

Morrison Supply has donated a Big Green Egg to raffle at this year's Lufkin Landscape Task Force Fall Festival and Auction. The event, which will celebrate the tastes, sounds and sights of Australia, will be held on Nov. 14. "Last year we did Italy," said LLTF board member Genie Flournoy. "We thought Australia would be fun and a little more casual and laid back, and Americans have always been fascinated with Australia."

Researching popular foods and wines for the gala has been an adventure, with some interesting items on the menu, Flournoy said.

"They have a bread called 'damper' and one of their desserts is lamington cake, which is a sponge cake dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut," she said.

Along with those traditional Oz favorites, Stevens Catering will be serving shrimp off the barbie and delighting guests with cream of pumpkin soup and other tasty tucker.

The task force held a wine tasting to decide which of Australia's vintages to serve.

"Many popular wines are from Australia and are readily available," Flournoy said.

While dining among the bamboo, guests will be enchanted by the exotic sounds of the digideroo and other Australian music. Singer-songwriter Connie Blackledge Welch, who is providing entertainment for the evening, is also getting into the spirit of the evening by learning some Australian songs, Flournoy said.

A live auction and raffle will include a hand-hewn garden arbor, The Big Green Egg smoker and other unique prizes.

Proceeds from the event will be used toward the building of an amphitheater at Bronaugh Park, the next phase of LLTF projects for the park.

"All of this will tie into downtown," Flournoy said. "When it's built, it will seat about 250 people, and we can have concerts and other things there."

Tickets are $55 each. For reservations call 875-3623 or 637-2006. Raffle tickets sell for $5 each and can be purchased at Morrison Supply, The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce and at the gala.

For more information about the gala call 637-3233 or 632-5413.
