What to be for Halloween?

It's that age-old question that starts popping into people's heads as the popular holiday approaches.

Friday afternoon at the Lufkin Mall the Spirit Halloween store was packed with last-minute shoppers trying to get that perfect costume for this year's festivities.

Regan Raider, 19, of Central, and her two friends Kristin Choate, 19, and Briana Childress, 19, both of Lufkin, were trying on costumes hoping to find a knock-out look this year.

"We're going to a party tonight (Friday) and then we're having a party on Halloween night too," Raider said. "It's going to be a busy weekend, so we've got to make sure we look good for all the parties."

Employees at the Spirit Halloween store said it's not too uncommon to see a last-minute rush as Halloween night nears.

"You'd be amazed at how many people wait until the last minute to get their costumes and end up not being what they wanted," said Erica Slomba, Spirit Halloween employee. "But we have enough choices here that you're bound to find something you like."

The more popular costumes this year might not be the first ones you'd think of.

"Some of our most popular items are the career costumes like cops and nurses and of course witches are always a big seller," Slomba said.

"Also all of our bug costumes have been selling quickly, like ladybugs and bumblebee costumes."

And of course there's always the classic scary favorites like Freddy Krueger, from the horror classic, "Nightmare on Elm Street," Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th," and Hannibal Lecter from "Silence of the Lambs."

But not everything is designed for adults. The costume shop also offers outfits for dogs and babies, just in case you want to get the whole family dressed up.

Kadrian Austin, 19, of Lufkin tried on several outfits before deciding on the Joker from the popular movie "The Dark Knight."

"I think it's a scary look and plus the Joker is a cool villain," Austin said.

Another popular item this year are "reversable" costumes.

"They are good to wear if you have more than one party to go to or you want to come out of the bathroom and surprise everybody," Slomba said.

This is the second year for the Spirit Halloween store to be located at the Lufkin Mall, having moved from its original location on North Timberland Drive.

The store opens each year on Sept. 2 and closes the day after Halloween on Nov. 1, when everything is sold at 50 percent off.

"It's a good chance to get your costumes for next year's party at half the price," Slomba said.

With all the people cramming into the store Friday to get a last-minute look, it should be a pretty scary-looking Halloween this year.
