Corrigan man indicted for intoxication manslaughter
Grand jury hands up 34 indictments

A Corrigan man responsible for a May 30 drunk driving crash in Burke that left three people dead has been formally indicted by an Angelina County Grand Jury.

Vicente Rico Gonzalez, 30, was indicted with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault Thursday. Although bond was not granted in his case, Gonzalez has been a free man since June 8 — the day he left, without a doctor's consent, a Houston hospital where he was recovering from a broken leg, pelvis and internal injuries, according to Department of Public Safety Spokesman Trooper Greg Sanches. Gonzalez was not placed under arrest in the hospital room because he was not considered to be a violent person, Sanches said.

"They really couldn't believe he left because he was hurt pretty bad. He was taking a chance of killing his own self for leaving like that without medical care," Sanches said. "All indications point to him going back to Mexico, but we don't know for sure."

Blood tests taken the night of the accident showed Gonzalez had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit at .228 when his vehicle — heading southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. 59, crashed head-on into a car, according to previous reports.

Lufkin resident 29-year-old Crystal Thomas died on impact and 48-year-old Willie Lacy, of Alto, died at the scene. Thomas' 4-year-old son Christopher Gross died from his injuries a few days later at Dallas Children's Hospital while her other son Jo Veair Thomas, 7, survived.

Gonzales is a 5 feet 6 inch tall Hispanic male, weighing around 170 pounds, according to a police report. He is believed to have family in Diboll and Polk County and he may be trying to flee to Mexico.

If you know where Gonzales is, call Crime Stoppers at 639-TIPS or leave an anonymous tip at lufkincrimestoppers.com. You never have to give your name and there is a $1,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest.
