Man flees after stolen credit card is declined

A woman's purse was reported stolen from her unlocked car Thursday evening in the 400 block of North Brentwood Drive.

While the Lufkin Police officer was taking the report, a man was trying to use one of the stolen credit cards at a store in northeast Lufkin. When the credit card was declined, the man threw the purse in the garbage and fled in a light-colored Lincoln. The purse was recovered and returned to the owner.

A man told police he was in his driveway in the 600 block of Burton Avenue Thursday afternoon when two men and a woman stopped in a white Ford Explorer and asked if he knew where James Street was located. The man told them he didn't know where it was, and the driver asked him what he had in his pocket, a police report stated. The man told them had only his wallet in his pocket and asked if they were trying to "jack" him. The driver nodded yes and the man ran for safety while the three people drove away.

A store employee was found to have stolen money from a cash register earlier in the week at a business in the 100 block of South John Redditt Drive.

The employee resigned and returned some of the money Thursday, according to a police report.

The Lufkin Police Department made three arrests late Thursday and early Friday. Arrests and charges included: William Curl, 24, four Class C misdemeanor charges; Eddie R. Garrett, 31, assault and criminal trespass; and Jesus Serrano, 53, third or more charge of driving while intoxicated.

The Angelina County Sheriff's Office made four arrests late Thursday and early Friday. Arrests and charges included: Karen Ann Hinze, 31, credit card abuse; Felix Rasmus, 45, bench warrant for driving while intoxicated; Tyrone Ronnie Dightman, 33, possession of drug paraphernalia; and John Richard Burch Sr,, 47, public intoxication.

The Angelina County Jail housed 246 inmates as of 10:15 a.m. Friday.
