Let's see, not long ago a few Islamic extremists from Pakistan, opened fire on unarmed citizens, shouting "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the greatest) in Mumbai, India. They were promptly, and accurately, called terrorists.

I would like to say thank you to The Lufkin Daily News for your coverage of the 10th anniversary of the Texas A&M bonfire collapse. Bonfire fell in November of my senior year at A&M and it is a day I will never forget. Thankfully all my friends were safe but we lost members of our Aggie family. Every year I take time to pause and remember those we lost even though I did not know them personally. They were just kids doing something they loved for a school that they believed in and having a great time. No one could have known how it would all be taken away in an instant. I think about where they would be right now and what their lives would be like. I also think about how the campus pulled together that day to help and to mourn. I still get chill bumps and teary eyed just thinking about the scene on campus that day. Thank you for reminding others who may have forgotten these young men and women. It's not about whether Bonfire will ever burn again, it's about the lives we lost.

EDITORIAL: Toasts & Roasts: Disappointing loss to gutsy Klein team ends Lufkin's year; and another gridiron gaffe

A toast to the Lufkin Panthers football team, which had a heartbreaking finish to an exciting season. The Panthers won eight games this year, including a victory over the No. 1 team in Class 4A. They came close against John Tyler and The Woodlands, both top-10 teams in Class 5A; the loss to The Woodlands meant Lufkin would not win the district championship for the first time since the Pack joined the group of Houston-area teams six years ago. Lufkin's star quarterback and running back will be back next year, but we feel for the seniors who really wanted this to be the Panthers' next state championship season. They gave it their all; in the end, it just didn't work out.
