Do you have Cherokee ancestors in North Carolina? Jeff Bowen has transcribed census records taken of the Eastern Cherokees in North Carolina These were Indians living on the reservation known as the Qualla Boundary. Records from the U.S. Court of Claims 1906-1910 give a wealth of family information. In 1884 under the Act of Congress of 1882, a complete roll of the Eastern Cherokees residing east of the Mississippi river was made by Agent Joseph G. Hester.
In 1835 the Eastern Cherokee domain comprised all or part of counties in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina. More than 4500 witnesses were examined, in 19 different states.
An example of one of the entries follows: "App. 57 - Missouri C. Lambert and 4 children, Seymour, Texas - Rt. #1, Box 16. Claimant was born in 1867 and claims her Indian blood through her father who was born in 1823 in Cherokee County, GA, and always lived in GA and Ala. He does not appear on any roll nor does his mother nor any of his or her family. Claimant makes no claim that either she or any of her ancestors were ever enrolled. It would seem if claimant's father or his mother had any Indian blood it was not recognized by the Cherokees and that they derived it from some other tribe or had severed their connection with the Cherokees prior to 1835."
"Eastern Cherokee By Blood 1906-1910" contains 180 pages, in soft cover, with a full name index. Cost is $22.50 plus $5 shipping and handling. Order your copy from The Clearfield Company, 3600 Clipper Mill Drive, Suite 260; Baltimore, Md. 21211.

If you do a lot of census research online, you will be delighted to learn that FamilySearch and Ancestry.com have joined to publish new images and enhances indexes to the U.S. Census online. The new 1900 Census images are now available at Ancestry.com and they are looking for volunteer indexers to help with the improved 1920 census index.
FamilySearch is digitally converting master microfilm copies of the original U. S. Federal Censuses from 1790 through 1930 and under this agreement will give these improved images to Ancestry.com. As projects are completed, images will be available for free in NARA reading rooms and FamilySearch's 4500 Family History Centers.

An early Nacogdoches obituary – 24 April 1911 Sharp McNeil dies
"Sharp McNeil, who has been in the Sanitarium here for about a week and who was operated on for appendicitis, died early Sunday morning. The remains were shipped to Cushing Sunday afternoon for interment.
"Mr. McNeil was attacked with appendicitis something like a week ago while here in attendance at court and was carried to the Sanitarium for treatment. So severe was the attack that at the time of the operation it was feared that he was beyond the aid of medical science, and thought everything possible was done for him little hope was entertained for his recovery from the first.
"The many friends of the family have the sympathy of the entire community."
