Lufkinites knocking out their Christmas lists at the Lufkin Mall have a new boutique to shop for the perfect present — Miss McGillicuddy's, offering an array of women's accessories, clothing and home decor items.

The shop, located on the JC Penney end of the mall, opened on Monday. Owner Mandy Smith began moving the store from its original Diboll location to Lufkin last month.

Miss McGillicuddy's owner Mandy Smith proudly displays her wares in her Lufkin Mall location on Friday. Smith moved the business from Highway 59 south in Diboll to Lufkin Mall.

"We opened in Diboll in 2007 with tanning, a stylist, nail tech and the boutique, but the past couple of years things transitioned into a bigger interest in the boutique than the tanning," Smith said. "With all the bad press tanning gets lately I decided the boutique items are easier to sell than tanning packages."

The boutique offers an exclusive line of boots, shoes and sandals by Corkys and a line of home decor and seasonal items by Hanna's Handiwork, in addition to purses and jewelry.

One common question Smith said she's heard this week from customers is where the name Miss McGillicuddy's originates. The name has followed her since childhood, she said.

"When I was really little my dad started calling me Myrtle McGillicuddy and I hated it," she said with a laugh. "Since this is my baby the name just stuck."

Smith said business was good this past week and she's looking forward to greeting Christmas shoppers.

"This week has been pleasantly overwhelming," she said. "Even today has been really busy. I'm looking forward to the holidays. That will be fun."

Smith said she's hoping to do some hiring before the peak of the holiday season arrives. She's looking at bringing in a few part-time helpers and a full-time assistant manager. Store hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.
