Kurth Memorial Library: Food for Fines drive beginning

Contributing writer

Sunday, November 01, 2009

Kurth Memorial Library is holding a "Food for Fines" drive beginning Monday and ending Nov. 21.

Patrons who owe late fees may bring in one can of food per dollar owed and we will waive those fines. Cans must be within their usable date and in good condition. Fines can only be waived for late fees, not for billed, lost or damaged items.

Patrons who do not owe fines but who would like to donate items are certainly welcome to do so. No credit can be given toward future fines. All items collected during this drive will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Our Genealogy department has an excellent collection of materials, both in print and online, that are available for those who wish to research their family trees.

Print materials include books covering families from all across the country, not just here in Texas. We also have a large collection of microfilm for back issues of The Lufkin Daily News. Some of the online tools include subscriptions to Heritage Quest, Ancestry.com and Footnote.com.

Heritage Quest has the original census images available online. All images are available from 1790-1930, but the indexing only includes 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 (partial). They also have over 25,000 family and local histories (books) which have been indexed. You may view the actual pages of these books. You can search selected records from Revolutionary War Era Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files. They are the actual images.

Ancestry.com has the largest collection of genealogical data available online. They have all census images available as well as complete abstractions. These have all been indexed. You can access more than 2 billion names in more than 3,000 databases. For example, in Texas you will be able to view the birth and death index as well as marriages and divorces. They add more data daily.

Footnote.com is now available at the library! Footnote has the 1930 census available. They have partnered with the National Archives to provide many documents never seen before on the Web. These are digital images of microfilm housed in the National Archives. Many of the records available are military. They begin with the American Revolution and include the Civil War, WW1, WW2 and Vietnam. They continue to add millions of original document and images monthly.
