AROUND ANGELINA: MET seeks Festival of Trees sponsors

The Lufkin Daily News

Sunday, October 25, 2009

The Museum of East Texas Guild is seeking sponsors for its 15th annual Festival of Trees. The Museum Guild fundraiser benefits programs of the Museum of East Texas.

The Festival of Trees opens Nov. 27 and concludes Jan. 4, 2010. Last year's grand display featured more than 70 trees ranging in size from three feet to 12 feet tall.

During the Festival of Trees, the museum hallways are transformed into a winter wonderland with a large variety of trees decorated in every way imaginable. It is a spectacular sight to behold and thrills and delights countless numbers of visitors annually.

Though the Festival of Trees officially concludes the first week of January, the philanthropic mission of this program allows the guild to contribute generously each year to Art Camp scholarships in the summer and special gifts to MET throughout the year.

In the summer of 2009, more than 150 students were granted scholarships to Art Camp, thanks in large part to the generosity of Festival of Trees sponsors.

Sponsoring a tree at any level is a unique opportunity to be a part of a Lufkin holiday tradition benefiting the museum and the extended community while also promoting your family, group or business with the theme of your choosing. Museum Guild members will decorate the tree according to the sponsor's desires and preferences, or sponsors can decorate their own tree. Tree sponsorship levels range between $50 and $1,000.

If you are interested in sponsoring a tree or volunteering as a tree decorator, please contact the Museum of East Texas at 639-4434.

Sponsors are asked to fill out their décor preferences by Friday.

Sponsorship cards and levels can be found at the Museum of East Texas' Web site metlufkin.org.

As a kickoff to the Halloween weekend, the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will present a free one-night film screening of the 1961 Canadian horror film "The Mask" at 7 p.m. Friday in The Cole Art Center at The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches.

The film, which is noted for its surreal 3D cinematography, tells the story of a young scientist, Dr. Allen Barnes, who experiences increasingly disturbing visions whenever he puts on a mysterious ancient tribal mask.

The visions begin to alter Barnes' personality and eventually drive him insane.

The screening is sponsored in part by SFA's Silent Horror Cinema course, SFA Friends of the Visual Arts and Nacogdoches Junior Forum.
