Saturday, May 03, 2008

How many times have you said to a family member, "You know, we haven't been to the – Forestry Museum, Museum of East Texas, History Center – fill in your favorite here?" Spring is the perfect time to play tourist in your own hometown, taking advantage of all the great things Lufkin has to offer.

The importance of travel and tourism on Lufkin and Angelina County's economy will be highlighted during local activities to recognize National Tourism Week, May 10-18. "Discovering Great American Traditions," this year's theme, will be used to educate citizens and city officials about the positive impact travel and tourism has on the local economy. National Tourism Week is celebrated across the nation to help promote travel to and within the United States, and works to increase awareness of the travel and tourism industry's economic, social, and cultural contributions to the United States.

"This week will be fun and informative for long-time residents, newcomers, and visitors," said Alisha Burrow, Manager of the Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau. "There are many benefits to us when tourism is developed and promoted. Tourism helps local businesses, helps create jobs, and enhances local tax revenues."

In commemoration of National Tourism Week, the Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau will have events such as the "Developing Tourism" photo contest and "At Your Service: Customer Service Hospitality Training," a training seminar dedicated to educate employees and managers the fundamental skills and management concepts needed for achieving satisfied customers, visitors, and guests.

The Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau, a division of the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, promotes economic development through tourism and encourages tourists to visit and enjoy historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities in Lufkin and Angelina County. For more information on tourism related events in the Lufkin area, or how you can participate, please contact the Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau at 634-6305.
