As a former resident and graduate of LHS I am heartbroken to see the devastation in East Texas. We offered up our home in North Texas and organized a relief supply collection and prayed alot, but still feel inadequate. I hope the slow response to Rita’s aftermath as well as Katrina’s mishandling as a whole will make everyone think twice before the next few elections.

What is it going to take to get some national or even urban media attention on Angelina County? I’m so disgusted with my own government of which I used to be so proud! Also, what’s with the bad treatment of Angelina County residents? Because they are not evacuees they are not eligible for the assistance of Katrina or Beaumont/Pt ArthurRita victims? Many have lost their houses as well!!!!!

I am wondering if anyone can tell me the situation around Sam Rayburn Lake. My father lives in San Augustine Park. The last time I got in contact with someone down there was Saturday morning. I can’t seem to find any news about that area. So please, if you can tell me anything, I would appreciate it.

I am trying to find information on where the residents of Shady Acres Nursing Home in Newton, TX were evacuated to. My dad is a resident of the nursing home and I have no idea where he is and if he’s okay. Anyone with information, please respond.
Thanks!

Re: Sam Rayburn. I live in Westwood Subdivision on Lake Sam Rayburn. A lot of trees are down, along with power lines and power poles. Couple homes in my area were damaged. For the most part, the majority of the damage is fallen trees. There is no electricty obviously, water or phone service. Cell phone service is also very limited if you can service at all. Water level is up, but not much. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if they are going to declare Angelina County as a devastation County? When you call the FEMA hotline they say that we haven’t been declared yet and there for cannot file for devastation assistance….. Where is the help for Angelina County after we opened our hearts and county to so many? Sarah

Wondering if anyone out their knows what we can do to get Deep East Texas Coop some help so they can up the power restoration efforts. According to their office power in Etoile is not expected until “one day next week” and some areas as long as four weeks.

I have talked to my sisters in Broaddus. They still have no power, the only grocery store in town is out of food, and there is no gas in town. The sewer plant was destroyed by the storm. FEMA has been coming down for the last few days with food and fresh water. It could be a while before the power is back on, as their lines come out of Jasper.

Would appreciate knowing what’s working, what’s not in Woodville. The lack of information is very frustrating. We want to get back, but not if there’s no water or gasoline.

Looking for information about Newton residents M/M Johnny Howard Gaudet. I have huge extended family in Rita’s path and these are two that I cannot find. What kind of damage did Newton experience? I heard it was heavy, but have learned no details. Howard & wife lived in a trailer so I’m sure there’s not much left of it. Please, someone, tell me anything you know about Newton & if you know of the whereabouts of my cousins.

I weathered the storm in Newton. Yes, there was substantial damage in the Newton area. However, most of the homes were spared. There are a lot of trees down and there are very little, if any power poles and power lines still standing. It will take a very long time before the electricity will be turned on. Also, I know one of the substations servicing the Newton power was completely demolished, the other one is not accessible. If you can give me an address of your family members I can have someone check on them for you.

Gov. Rick Perry says “we’re turning the corner.” I wonder if he or anyone else, including this newspaper, has thought to ask the people affected by the storm, the people in East Texas still suffering a week later from no electricity and no food, whether they think they have “turned the corner.” Get out of the office, LDN, and see for yourself. Don’t just rely on uninformed blather from the governor and others. What else do you expect them to say? As someone who is living in this mess we have right now, the corner is still beyond sight.
