Back in business

OK, we have our electricity back at the newspaper, which means I can finally get online to approve your posts and write an update of my own. We’ve also just tested our printing press, so we should be able to publish Monday morning’s paper at our own facility instead of somewhere out of town.

I’ve been running all over town this weekend. In fact, I was the only idiot driving on Frank Avenue during the hurricane, and I was just going from the city’s Emergency Operations Center back to the newspaper office.

Thanks to everyone for your posts. We’ll be sending our Hurricane Rita aftermath coverage to our Web site as soon as we get our stories written, and I’ll keep an eye on this blog.

We have evacuee friends forced to leave Kountze who ended up at the high school in Huntington. We have had no word since 6:30 am Saturday. Any information regarding the condition of the high school and what is being done with the evacuees would be greatly appreciated. We are New Orleans evacuees in Dallas and desperate for news. Many thanks.

Does anyone know if rescue crews have reached the AirStream Trailer park outside Zavalla TX off 147 hwy/Sam Rayburn Lake? My parents, both in their 80’s, as well as persons evacuated from the coast were stranded there. The last time I spoke with them, they were going to sit in their car with their seat belts on to ride out the storm. Sat. one person was able to use her cell phone after going up on a hill. She called my sister to let us know my parents were ok, but trees were down all over the park blocking the roads, power & phones out, damage etc.etc.etc. We’ve not heard from anyone since. We really appreciate any information!

I want to come retrieve my Mother from the Central area around the State School, but I do not know the condition of Highway 69 and whether gasoline is available around Alto, Rusk, or Jacksonville. I can make it back to one of those cities, but I want to make certain there is gasoline available to get back to North Texas. Anyone know?

Does anyone have any info on when Woodville will have power and how bad damage is there? None of the Beaumont or Lufkin news site show anything.

I am Mad…. My parents livein Pollok, and they have been out of electricity since Saturday morning, early. My mom is bed ridden, heart problems and diabetic, they have no food, no air and she is sick and getting sicker. This is Tuesday already. I’ve called FEMA and they say Angelina County isn’t on the disaster list, that a city official has to call it in, so they won’t help. I was given the number to the local red cross and they won’t answer the phones and the message box is full. I can’t even get hold of the DHS department. I live in Iowa and my parents need help. You can publish this for all I care. If something happens to her I will hold the electric company, red cross, the city of Lufkin responsible. I talk to the electric company and they said they would put her priorty, and that was Sunday. Please if anyone has any advice for me please call me or email me, please. 515-275-2539 icunicorns@hotmail.com My parents need electric and food. They have a fixed income and lost all their food in the freezer and fridgerator. Thanks for any help, God Bless. Reverend MaLinda

I would just like to know why the national news is still so concerned with New Orleans, not that I don’t feel for those people. But come on people hear in east texas are devestated as well. And why is FEMA in Lufkin and Angelina County if we aren’t a disaster area. People have been without lights and food and water here as well. I personally am losing wages because we can’t work. Where is our Debit Cards???????

To the lady who was asking about people near Etoile. I am from Etoile and have left there because of no power. Lots of trees down and power lines everywhere. The phones were working, just couldn’t get calls in, but were able to call out. Do you know exactly where they lived and maybe I know them. Will try to find them or at least get word to them that you are looking for them.

I invite everyone to call Governor Rick Perry with your complaints. The number is 512-463-2000. I don’t know if it will help, but it can’t hurt. I also invite him to visit some of the communities like Black Forest and Zavalla if he does not consider this a disaster area.

I just want to let everyone know that my mom is now in the hospital and in alot of pain. Still no electricity out there. I just don’t understand why the mayor isn’t calling FEMA and stating Angelina County as Disaster county so the people can get more help. I’ve been reading this paper and talking with my brother and sister about everything. Maybe everyone needs to contact the mayor and put in a request. At least my mom is in air condition and getting food but she is in alot of pain. Thanks MaLinda
