Parents protest violence at Lufkin High School

The regular meeting of the Lufkin Independent School District board of trustees opened Thursday night in the midst of a silent protest by parents and students, hoping to provide a solution to ongoing violence on the high school campus.

Wow…First I think a lot of the issues is lack of home training and kids being the products of uneducated ignorant a** parents, the school district..Lufkin, Hudson, Huntington, Diboll or anywhere else is not the people that should be teaching our kids

Survey says: Lufkinites want more parks, trails

After several rounds of citizen surveys and focus group studies, citizens have expressed a desire to add more parks and trails to Lufkin — in line with the city’s ongoing Parks Master Plan.

Staff with MHS Planning and Design, LLC, have been constructing the plan over the past year and presented the results Tuesday evening to the Lufkin City Council.Link to full story.

Report: Lufkin man drives rare car into lagoon

A Lufkin man driving one of the world’s fastest and most expensive cars accidentally drove the car into a lagoon Wednesday near Galveston after being distracted by a low-flying pelican, according to La Marque police.

Big giver: Lufkin Industries raises $251,433 for United Way

Despite a roller coaster financial year for Lufkin Industries, the newly released United Way fundraising numbers show the company not only helped them exceed this year’s goal, but they donated more than a third of the total.

NCAA: Dez Bryant must sit out all of season

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant, a former Lufkin Panther, will remain suspended for the remainder of the football season for lying to NCAA investigators.

The NCAA ruled Tuesday that the junior All-American will not be eligible to play until September 2010, possibly bringing his college career to an end if he enters the NFL draft.

Oklahoma State plans to appeal the decision, but athletic department spokesman Kevin Klintworth declined further comment. The university said it could receive a decision on the appeal as early as next week.

Huntington principal’s husband, school parent arrested after confrontation

The Huntington High School principal’s husband and a school parent have been arrested after an alleged ongoing dispute erupted into violence on campus.

Both men were booked into the Angelina County Jail on Monday. Frank Williams, 67, husband of HHS Principal Jennifer Williams, has been charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. Greg Boston, 38, is charged with third-degree felony exhibition of a firearm. Both men bonded out the same day, each on a $5,000 bond.

Backroads ‘mudding’ competitions creating mess that costs county thousands of dollars to repair

Almost every weekend after heavy rains large groups of people engage in a sport called “mudding” on a huge deer lease on Ben Dunn Road, near Hudson.

Residents in the area have been cleaning up beer cans, cups, boxes and trash a lot recently after the crowds have packed up and gone home.

The huge trenches left behind in the roads from the “mudders,” or large customized truck tires, is costing the county thousands of dollars to repair — and locals say they’ve had enough.

Politicians come together in Lufkin to support Proposition 11

Several top state officials came to Lufkin Monday to speak in support of Proposition 11, a bill that aims to protect private property owners that will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot in Texas. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas); Texas Farm Bureau President Kenneth Dierschke; Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Todd Staples; and state Rep. Jim McReynolds (D-Lufkin), all lent their support to Proposition 11 while gathered at the Southern Stables Bed and Breakfast on Loop 287, near U.S. Highway 59 North.Link to full story.

Judge William Wayne Justice dies at 89

From the Associated Press:

U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice, whose rulings led to sweeping prison reforms and widespread desegregation of public schools in Texas, has died. He was 89. Justice was born in Athens, Texas, on Feb. 25, 1920. He was 7 when his trial attorney father put the child’s name on the law firm’s shingle. Justice, in a 1985 interview with AP, said: “I love the law. I’ve been with the law all of my life. I was born and bred with the law.”

LISD weighs how to spend ‘leftover’ bond money

The Lufkin ISD board continued to discuss the use of $10 million in leftover bond money in a Tuesday morning finance meeting. The “leftover money” stems from the district’s bond projects coming in $10 million under its $49.5 million budget.

When Shari Ratliff put out the word she was looking for a used guitar to send to her son stationed in Afghanistan, she didn’t expect such a large response.

Handgun ammo shortage has stores limiting sales

A nationwide ammunition shortage for handguns has gripped self-defense gun enthusiasts as the demand has gone through the roof in the past year, and there won’t be any relief soon in East Texas, according to local suppliers. WIC now rolling out healthier food options

Whole grains, fresh produce and soy-based products are some of several new food items available for the first time to the more than 3,800 Angelina County mothers, infants and children benefiting each month from a federal food assistance program. The overhaul of food choices offered by WIC, which will be locally available Monday, is the first of its kind in decades, according to Angela Quillin, WIC program director for Angelina County and Cities Health District.Link to full story.

On Wednesday an act of violence rocked the East Texas school system — a John Tyler High School teacher stabbed to death in a classroom and a student believed responsible in custody. City, county officials call for stronger input on hurricane recovery money

Lufkin Mayor Jack Gorden urged East Texas county and city officials in a 12-county regional meeting Thursday in Woodville to join together in an effort to lobby for more control over $208.8 million dispersed in a second round of Hurricane Ike recovery money. The federal money — part of a second round to help communities prepare for future natural disaster — was carved out by the Texas Department of Rural Affairs, formerly known as the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.Link to full story.

Grave situation: New Diboll city policy to remove memorabilia from grave sites leaves families of the deceased distressed by the news

Some families with loved ones buried in Forest Haven Cemetery in Diboll said they received devastating news this summer. Letters mailed out from the city stated they have until Sept. 28 to remove memorabilia, fencing and solar lights from the graves or the city will remove the items for them due to a city policy.
