Backroads ‘mudding’ competitions creating mess that costs county thousands of dollars to repair
Almost every weekend after heavy rains large groups of people engage in a sport called “mudding” on a huge deer lease on Ben Dunn Road, near Hudson.
Residents in the area have been cleaning up beer cans, cups, boxes and trash a lot recently after the crowds have packed up and gone home.
The huge trenches left behind in the roads from the “mudders,” or large customized truck tires, is costing the county thousands of dollars to repair — and locals say they’ve had enough.

They all go to eat at Jack-in-the-Box on the corner of 69 and the loop when they’re done. You can’t park because these inbred redneck idiots park their over-sized trucks and trailers across the rows of parking spaces. Many of these morons come from Houston and Beaumont up here to “mud”. What an infantile mentality. I’m appalled at the sight of the thousands of dollars tied up in each of their fruity little four-wheeling rigs. Law enforcement should land on these retards with both feet.

I know its a problem with them littering an messing up the roads. The redneck idiots you are talking about have the same right to use the parking lot as you do I have the same problem with the bass boats so do we come down on them also. along with the big trucks. And most of those people have came back from alto or jacksonville. And by the way i own one of those fruity little four wheeling rigs. I think yall are just mad because you cant build something like that

I disagree completely. They have spent over 8 million dollars in downtown to promote this level of tourism to that area of Lufkin. These “redneck idiots” obviously did not need that level of spending in order for tourism to be promoted here. Instead of spending so much on improving the roads or spending more to incarcerate and prosecute them wouldn’t we have killed 2 birds with one stone to just turn one of the dilapitated structures either in downtown or some of the now vacant property fixing to be scrapped out into one big mud bog and charge admission?
Seems a real waste that capital improvements didn’t manage to drum up the “tourism” that one backwoods unpaved county road did.

Everyone has a right to utilize parking. No one has the right to monopolize parking. It’s called courtesy and anyone that takes up ten parking spaces for one vehicle of people have none.
I have no problem with anyone, redneck or otherwise, coming to town spending tourist dollars. I do have a problem with anyone, redneck or otherwise, coming to town and not acting appropriately.

I know Ben, I was just providing the dissenting opinion for this one.
Did a good job at it too wouldn’t you say?
Downtown road restructuring - Approx. 2 million dollars.
Pines theatre (acquisitions and restoration costs) - Approx 3 million and counting.
The fact that a giant hole of mud managed to accomplish where these have failed - Priceless.

Hunting, Mudding, Drinking, Fishing, etc. It seems these are National Pastimes in Texas. No, I am not a Texas native. Since moving here in the early 1990’s, these activities have been as commonplace as football games. These are simply games that most rednecks play; it’s a way of life.

WTET, you’re right. These things, as infantile as they may be, are a way of life here in East Texas. I find it amusing that people don’t realize how stunted they are developmentally to engage in such activities. Ever hear of Jesco White? Youtube “The Dancing Outlaw”. Many of our East Texas brethren fit this mold. hahahaha

I am much more a fan of the youtube mattress jousting events. Definitely see some olympic potential there.
Sorry to hear about the JITB parking situation. I can hardly afford the budget to eat there these days and as such am not particularly distressed by this particular problem. One thing that I would be interested to know is this some sort of paid sport? I have seen the trucks, trailers and four-wheeler rigging you speak of and I’m just dumbfounded as to where these people are working to afford such amenities?
It is of modest comfort to know that if anything is recession proof it is mudding, drinking and football. The school just acquired quite a few acres themselves, if they would just redefine the legal issues with drinking on campus we could actually do all three in the same place. Change Abe Martin to Redneck Olympic Arena, throw in a few extra events like lawn mower races and a beer can toss that place would pay for itself. It would save the taxpayers millions, literally.

You do make me proud, Ben. You too, Concerned. If the highlight of these people’s week is to crawl out of their tripple-wide in Beaumont Texas, jump in their jacked-up pickup truck, & drive all the way to Hudson…just to go “muddin”…there really are some total stupid a## people in this state. When one of these brainless wonders has “a few too many”, & wipes out an innocent family out on Hwy 94, maybe the law will finally pull the plug on this Red Neck play ground.

They have a right to do anything they want? Even when it’s costing the county thousands to clean up the mess? Might want to rethink that liberal tolerance on that one Captain America.
We cannot place all the blame on patrol, the “redneck idiots” outnumber the officers at least 10:1 (probably higher) what are they supposed to do when the powers that be in the county would rather siphon funds to security cameras for the courthouse and a county wide computer upgrade rather than create jobs for real humans in the form of more patrol units.
Don’t get me started on the trailer houses. I am the queen of my singlewide and proud of it. (Hey my taxes went down this year). And besides I would rather they climb out of their triple-wide to go muddin than stay in and procreate.

Unfortunately these “mudding” areas are not only in Angelina county. This is a craze with some “redneck” teenagers too. Of course if the teenager belonged to me and came home with a muddy or torn-up truck I could take care of the situation myself. I certainly wouldn’t need LE. Sorry about all the parking problems, but can we really say who is allowed to park at a public place. What about the RVers? I think CT’s idea is great. Sorry though I won’t be there.

This was a mustard and mayonaise conversation. Don’t try to Ketchup.
My taxes went down because mobile homes depreciate (which I have explained on various appraisal district threads many times, want to run with the big boy pants then keep up). The tax on the land that I own went up due to the timber tax increase and property valuations, but was offset by the fact that the value the property went up was not as much as the value of my mobile home went down. It had not as you like to say a damn thing to do with “my King” or anyone else.
You misspoke, in accordance with your previous thoughts everything was Ben’s fault. Thank you Ben for lowering my taxes.

People wake up. It has nothing to do with the house you live in or who is president. I grew up here and many many years ago we did the same things with our trucks. The sons of Doctors, Lawyers and county officials. I know, I was there. It is wrong to do these things but lots of us did it and yes they need to be stopped and fined just as we should have been. I don’t live in a mobil home, I served my country for 22 years and more over, my wife and I make over 80,000 dollars a year. So where you came from has nothing to do with it.

David I think most of us were being just a little humorous in our analogies. I have had the pleasure of speaking with quite a few of these people on several occasions now and know most of them are smart enough to realize that the trailer house modest income stigma “redneck” really wouldn’t be able to afford the tens of thousands of dollars worth of upgrades these trucks often have for their typical teenager.
I certainly missed that memo as a teen in my household. Where were they passing out money for monster trucks? My parents thought it was a better idea for me to go to work and pay the car insurance (which even then was astronomical and took most of my 40 hour a week 4.75 an hour check) on the sedan I was driving.
The sons of doctors, lawyers and county officials. Somewhere in your wisdom you think a doctor, lawyer or county official who dealt with his parenting issues by throwing a kid keys to an oversized noisemaker is going to really be affected by a 500 dollar fine?
For 26,000 in damage that is costing the taxpayers I don’t see how that is near enough at all. Within the city limits of Lufkin they can condemn and knock down a persons home just because they had the lack of means to keep it up. Start seizing a few of those trucks to help the county with that debt and the lesson wouldn’t take 3 generations to be learned.
Where you came from has everything to do with it, we were just feeding into the typical stereotype, but if it is as you say teenage sons of the wealthy if not for where they come from they would have had no means for this sort of automobile purchase. I’m reasonably sure it is a mix of the two with some young adults as well who have yet to reach the age of responsibility. What I don’t understand is even if you bought a used offroad, the souping up would still cost a fortune. Why is it if they all have money for that sort of thing none of them seem to have the funds or inclination to purchase private land for such activities? Or is it just that tearing up public roads makes it that much more fun?
How much fun do you think it would be if the county folk took to driving their John Deere’s through Brook Hollow and Crown Colony?
Stop and Think I have very little interest in addressing Real American as he has left very little doubt in my mind of his purpose for being here. Wheel-of-Fortune rerun? Now that was just plain funny.

Not just walking behind a dump truck shoveling in what looks to be black dirt filling potholes. We all know that doesnt work. It is seriously a waste of money to repair the roads that way. Have those kids get out and do some manual labor I am sure it will be good for them and teach them a lesson.

We went from parking problems at Jack-In-The-Crack, to someone blabbing about his yearly combined salary (not so great, really), to Timberland’s everlasting Boomers. Now, what is the real problem?
For one, the real problem lies in County enforcement and decision-making. Not in the ‘mudders’ bringing their vehicles to the site to sport around. This sport caught on in Louisiana and Florida…and now it seems as though it is a mark of distinction to run around with an ultra-high vehicle with packs of mud sprayed and impacted all over it. So, if the County considers this wanting to be curtailed, so be it. DO IT!
The alternate is for those who are involved in the sport of muddin’, to simply find private land, with egress, to run the trucks around a certain area, designated for this activity. Rent the area out!
The ultimate dangers of these high vehicles on the road are the drivers having impaired vision, and cannot readily see people or children directly in front, or on the vehicles right, or left sides, or close to the rear of the vehicle.
Now come the Boomers. It causes a nuisance. Road distractions at it’s best. Timberland Dive, even when I lived in Lufkin, back in the 90’s, had the same type of thing. The Boomers are, or could be, in a Boomer Club, too. But nevertheless, it is a road nuisance.
What to do…oh, pray tell! Well the City and County officials are not enforcing the situations at all. Their complete lack of interest and obligations are virtually hanging out like the bare a**ed chick at the swimming pool! Lack of law enforcement in both areas here are someday going to create a big mess. Then, another referendum will have to be made. Voting will be done. Too late then, chumps!
People…seems there are many problems in this world today, and handling these minuscule decisions the City and County should be directly able to facilitate, are being ignored.
Parking at Jack? Well, either get additional area for in-out driving such as in a truck stop (if this is feasible), or allocate special areas to park these trailered vehicles.
Man, how comments can fly. What I would like to see, if any County of City vehicles can “make it” through the mud bog!

Are you men or mice? You say bucket of nails or IEDs. Think like a woman guys go for the glory with the WMDs. And we let ya’ll dominate football no wonder the teams are overpaid and dull.
Numbers are easy, and I am way better with them than I am with people, but taking into account the mudders blew 26,000 of the county tax base, and the city council as well as county officials have blown several million and intend to blow several million more on unprofitable, unneccessary expansions, improvements, tourist attractions (the name seems to change with the desired contribution) I think the aim may well be a little bit off with this one.
There may well be an easier solution to patrolling, seizing vehicles or even fining these good ol’ boys out to chug a few and have a good time, just put a county wide 3 dollar surcharge on every gallon of gas for vehicles with wheels measuring more than 18 inches. If they can afford to tear up the roads after that, well at least they will have paid for the repairs prior to the trip.
Wild Bill, I think you need to change your screen name to Wyatt Earp, your brand of justice is definitely my style.
Yes Jackie, I can guarantee anyone that wants to wreak havoc upon my land will have to deal with the PMSing mad cow female that lives there.

My comment was more of a radical statement as I cannot imagine they would actually impose a countywide surcharge on gas, though if I were considering it anyone with a tax ID for farm use or business purposes (i.e. trucking etc) would qualify for an exemption the same way I do with off road diesel for the tractor. It probably wouldn’t extinguish the mudding so much as it would lessen the burden or drive them to an area we where the fuel would be more efficiently acquired elsewhere. (though I’m still a fan of just making it a business and providing a mud pit right here in town) as it would definitely serve as an economy boost.
As far as myself goes I was referring to the character Calamity Jane. With your definition of Calamity though I would say unfortunately I cannot alter my statement. Widespread destruction and distress, ha ha ha. Well I’m just not a huge fan of stroking the male ego or acting like Malibu Barbie in order to “catch” a mate. I’m 6’1 with nerves of steel, even on here before I was ousted as a female it was always assumed I was a man. Men do not want that kind of intimidation romantically, and as Real American has proven I do not endeavor to take on an adolescent as a husband. My original statement was correct Jackie, if you met my mother and my mother’s mother you would know exactly why.
