As Tropical Storm Gustav churned toward the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, local residents and city officials were using lessons learned three years ago with Hurricane Rita to prepare.

Gettin’ bugged: Return of the love bugs can damage car’s paint job
Hordes of love bugs have begun making a return threat to car paint jobs in East Texas.
Carwashes and driveways have become war zones as the fight begins to remove the coating of squashed bug bodies from bumpers, headlights and hoods. Leaving the bugs on your car’s paint too long can cause damage, according to Dr. Paul Risk, professor emeritus in the College of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Trail grant funding approved to upgrade Kit McConnico Park
The Deep East Texas Trail & Route Access Coalition’s grant request for $60,000 to expand and enhance the trail system at Kit McConnico Park has been approved for funding by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Professors object to Charlie Wilson chair
Former U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of East Texas might have been a suitable figure for Hollywood, but he doesn’t warrant having an endowed chair in Pakistan studies named for him at the University of Texas, according to 12 faculty members who specialize in South Asian studies.

Conventions and Visitors Bureau seeking bigger piece of hotel/motel tax pie
The Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau will make a presentation tonight to the City Council requesting $349,700 from the hotel/motel tax revenue for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

Aspen Power Company holds community forum to discuss future of North Lufkin biomass plant
Aspen Power president Danny Vines, whose company plans to build a new biomass power plant in North Lufkin, told a packed room Wednesday night at the Lewis-Toran Retirement Community center that he anticipates the new plant will create 405 jobs, including millions of dollars in combined assets on local tax rolls.

The owner of The Lufkin Daily News has decided to put the daily newspaper and all affiliated operations up for sale with a goal of closing a deal by the first quarter of 2009.

Offroad vehicle use meeting elicits heated debate
Discussions heated up several times Tuesday night at the Davy Crockett Ranger office in Ratcliff as outdoor enthusiasts from all over Texas came in to listen to U.S. Forest officials discuss the new Travel Management rule implemented this summer. It was standing-room only as those in attendance gave their opinions on the fresh laws.

Aspen Power plans to start construction on North Lufkin biomass power plant in September
Groundbreaking on a Lufkin power plant that will use logging debris and other wood waste for fuel is scheduled for the second week of September, according to a spokesman for the company that is building the facility.

DA turns over forfeiture funds; sheriff has yet to fill request
One Angelina County office has responded to the county auditor’s request to turn over forfeiture funds and corresponding financial records after discrepancies were found in both offices. A second office is expected to turn over records later in the week.
