East Texans keep an eye on Gustav
As Tropical Storm Gustav churned toward the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, local residents and city officials were using lessons learned three years ago with Hurricane Rita to prepare.

does anyone think that Richland Parish in Rayville Louisiana will get any bad weather. Our Schools are shut down, and the weather says we are to expect the worst. What happens to us if we have to evacuate? What about our pets? What happens to them? I for one just couldn’t leave my pets behind.Who will help us, like my family that doesn’t have the means to leave?

Theresa, you can take your pets with you. According to new guidelines, shelters must accept pets now. I would make sure you have them caged or on leashes. Also, bring food for them and any medications they may need. Good luck.

LUFKIN
Shelter Hub located at Lufkin High School; (936) 630-0620
Volunteers should call the same number. You must call this number before going directly to a Lufkin shelter. That’s so organizers can keep track of which evacuees are in which shelters.
NACOGDOCHES
Shelter Hub located at Fredonia Hill Baptist Church; Emergency phone bank number is (936) 559-2510.
Evacuees must check in at the hub before going directly to a shelter.
If you want to volunteer in Nacogdoches, go to the Recreation Center at 1112 North Street.

Laura, I’m sure all of the shelters in town would graciously accept any volunteers. My church’s shelter was asking for volunteers this morning and that is First United Methodist, 805 E. Denman, which is across the street from Lufkin Middle School and the bowling alley. We have a group of disabled folks already in the shelter and then some evacuees, too, about 130 this morning. We call them “guests”. They were asking for help serving this evening. The best thing to do is just to show up and ask how you can help.

We have thousands of people here in the shelters and in our personal homes, we have a chance of 2 feet of rain/tropical storm force winds, but we can’t decide whether to hold school or not????? I know what it is…we don’t want to get behind on that TAKS curriculum, now, do we? Whatever!

If we need to open schools to shelter people because the churches are full, then Mr. Knight will decide to close schools. It would be irresponsible of him to make that decision sooner if it is not necessary. The storm is not expected to affect Lufkin until Wed or Thursday, and believe it or not, the state will probably make us make up the days if we close. I trust that he will make a decision that is best for all concerned when there is ample information.

It is the right decision to have school. We would have to make it up on Good Friday or Memorial Day. If it gets bad with rain and flooding or power outages, they will call school off for Wednesday. There is no need to call off school “just in case”. The effects of doing that are far reaching. If you want to keep your child home, that is okay. I am sure they school officials are aware that attendance may be low.

It may be a good idea to have school education-wise (not having to make up days, etc) but it is NOT a good idea to have it safety-wise, and I think that’s a little more important.
We’re obviously going to get tons of rain. There’s more than likely no “maybe” on that. Children and teenagers should not be driven/driving to school in these conditions. It is dangerous. You can’t tell if a road is flooded and it doesn’t take much to pull your car off the road in a flood.
Have some common sense, people.

OK, I get it, a hurricane is comming, ease up on the doom and gloom coverage. Yes, evacuees will be here, we encourage this because the city benefits. But once your money is gone can you please leave in an orderly fashion. Please just provide us with pertinent info, school closings, closings, numbers to call if needed. The latest and greatest is available on radio and TV. Just give me enough pulp to strap together in a makeship raft if needed. No news is good news. Or how about an article on BBQ TV dinners in case the power goes out.

I am really more concerned about the wind. Am I looking at the wrong weather sites or are we supposed to have at least 35mph winds along with the rain? I think it would be better to be safe than sorry. Cars and buses should stay off the road unless it is absolutely necessary.

I for one will not be sending my children to school tomorrow. I hate that the schools will lose money for my two not being in class, but the safety and well being of my children mean a lot more to me than the state funds that the schools will get for them being in class. They are already stating that we may possibly be having early dismissal, that is simply because as long as long as the children are in class until 10am, the schools will receive full funds for each of those kids. I am going to play it on the side of “better safe than sorry”.

Definitely call your school board members! It may let the schools know it is not worth the risk. What I don’t get is that Lufkin ISD has moved all their vehicles to higher ground, but they don’t care that the parents and some students are going to have to drive through that same water to get to school and back home. They are going to wait until power is lost or schools are flooded, then call the parents to come and pick them up? They wouldn’t even have to make up that day, if the district would file a waiver with the state. Just exactly how much learning do they think is going to happen, tomorrow??

School open! Are you serious? My children WILL NOT be attending LISD schools tomorrow. Shame on you for not thinking about the children and the teachers and others who have to travel to get to school. A lot of LISD children live in rural areas…it’s going to be hard to get these children to and from school and many of these families will not have eletricity. I know money is earned for children missing but don’t we have make up weather days? And to say early dismissal..that makes it even harder on the parents. Just close the schools so parents can weather out the storm with their loved ones. I question how much learning will be taking place with scared children in bad weather anyway. We can close school early for football games but can’t close school for possible flooding and high winds? Hmmm…something is wrong….Zavalla is the only school with the children and parents and teachers in thought.

Huntington ISD.. What forecast are you watching? The Intermediate & Elementary campus, plus High school auditorium all flood with 2” of rain, let alone wind, 6” with 30-40 MPH winds for one day, isn’t worth it. Nothing is covered for our kids to get into the school unless you are in Pre-K or K! Thanks for thinking about the almighty dollar, & not the kids or parents you serve. I’ll remember this next election. Will I see any of you in the rain tomorrow morning when I drop off my children? If I let them go at all.

I am very thankful my girls have graduated from Lufkin High. I can not beleive Roy Knight’s decision to hae school tomorrow when no one really knows right now what kind weather we’re going to have here tomorrow. He has moved the school buses to higher ground, but the kids aren’t worth keeping out of the weather. Roy Knight is letting the all mighty dollar stand in the safety of the children in LISD. My grandson is 4 years old and in pre k and they can count him absent because he won’t be there. My daughter and I have discussed it and his safety and mental state is more important. Not to mention he has bad weather days that can be used for this situation. I hope I see his car floating down the road with him in it.

Roy Knight and his board members have made the decision to open schools on Tuesday. Are Roy Knight and the board members going to hold full responsibility for my child being safe or not safe? Should something happen to my child, which of the board members should I foward my medical or automobiles costs to? After my child gets sick from being in the wind and rain, which of the mighty board members is going to purchase whatever medication is necessary to treat my child’s cold? All of these questions need an answer when you make the important decision to require my child to weather the storm and go to school during a storm that causes for national attention or be counted absent and miss out on a day of learning, as if she just chose no to go to school, when we as parents have decided that keeping our kids safe is more important.

I personally live in a VERY rural school district and as of now they also have not canceled classes. Two of my biggest concerns are the facts that 1. 30-45 mph winds are sustained winds and do not include Possible wind gusts which could be even higher. 2. It was plainly stated on many news forecasts and even mentioned here that all High Profile vehicles should take caution and not be on the roads unless Necessary… exactly what do school administrators classify a bus ? Rain is a fact of life in the woods of east texas and we all have made it through these problems but if these are the Educators using their Intelligence to give our young people the knowledge and forethought to guide their futures what are we as parents and voters saying ourselves ?

Just goes to show how irrational some folks can be before the facts are even confirmed. The right call was made. Had the weather turned nasty and heavy storms were in the area, Mr. Knight would have been informed and made the right call. I’ve never seen so many worry warts. Of course, these are probably the same people that were upset back when school started on Aug. 15 because it was too hot to have school.

I did not have time to read the comments over the weekend, and yesterday, so I missed all the panic. It is comical to see all the comments that are CLEARLY from students. They ALL scream, “NO SCHOOL! It is our kids SAFETY we are concerned about!” Bologna! It is kids that want a day off already. Students, if you take the time to read the posts again, you will SEE that your posts are full of mistakes, misspelled words, and grammar errors out the wazoo! When you finish school, and learn to express yourself properly, you will garner a bit more attention. There MAY be a few parents in the bunch, but the majority of them were easy to pick out. The others must have been parents that were just too upset to competently express themselves.
