United Way of Angelina County sets goal at $600,000
Angelina County’s United Way fundraising goal for 2008-09 is $600,000 — a lower mark than last year because of the struggling economy, according to the chairman of the local effort.

Lufkin to purchase two fuel stations for city vehicles
Gas prices have put a strain on the city’s budget with an over $5 million increase on fuel alone, according to City Manager Paul Parker.

Temple-Inland earnings improve in 2008’s second quarter

It’s never too early to start talking about Lufkin Panther football, but the topic of the moment — with one month before the high school season starts — is, “Where are we going to sit?”
Most longtime, diehard Pack fans already have season tickets to the Panthers’ home games, and have for years. Many others — including, unfortunately, parents of some of the hundreds of students who are performing on the field or in the stands — have not been able to secure those golden (and purple) tickets.

EDITORIAL: New health clinic at middle school could be lifesaver for some families
Lufkin Middle School has become a city unto itself. It deserves its own medical clinic.
The huge campus on Denman Avenue is home to more than 1,700 kids in sixth through eighth grades during the school months. It used to be the Lufkin High School campus; in fact, it has two things the current high school does not yet have: an auditorium and a full-sized gymnasium.
Now, thanks to the foresight of Lufkin school leaders and their partnership with other local entities, the middle school will have its own health center — myPAC, a cool abbreviation for “my place to access care.”

Taxpayers should take time to learn about county’s finances
It’s election season and, coincidence or not, the fiscal policies of our county sheriff are being questioned again.
County Auditor Eddie Gray has complained in letters to Sheriff Kent Henson and the district attorney’s office that there are “several areas of concern” in the way the sheriff’s office processes its forfeiture and restitution funds.

Judge rules in favor of Neches River National Wildlife Refuge
Judge Jorge A. Solis Monday denied motions by the City of Dallas and the Texas Water Development Board that sought to overturn the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge and make way for a reservoir Dallas predicts might be needed in fifty years. Instead, the judge upheld the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?s 2006 creation of the refuge.
