Burning yard waste

If your neighbor’s yard waste burning has you gasping for air, there’s something you can do about it.

In the city of Lufkin, brush, grass, leaves, branch trimmings or other plant growth can be burned as long as it’s burned on the property it came from and the person doing the burning is the property owner or has permission from the property owner.

Should a neighbor complain about the smoke, the person burning has to stop and cannot burn on that property again, according to the city.

I lost a weeks wages after neighbor burned poison ivy/oak. Went to Urgent Doc embarassed, looked like a Sumo wrestler with millions of blisters on face. Scared family, pets, small chidren it was so bad. I am all for burning leaves…..but if a vine-Throw that stuff in landfill. never burn it. Leaves of 3 leave them be. Darn sure don’t burn them.

Good point Vicki! One of those little details we tend to forget! I agree with you. I am highly allergic to poison ivy/oak, too. I would hate to have a neighbor burn it in my neighborhood! It is a natural yard item, but it can certainly cause some health issues as you have described. I think the oil from the plant floats in the smoke from the fire. My sister got it systemic years ago from burning it. We learned from her nightmare not to burn it.

I burn because I have 2 1/3 acres and about 150 Oak Trees, and a mess everytime the wind blow or it rain or squirells decide to play in the trees. I am also allergic to posion Ivy/oak. We burn only what we are suppose to burn and to try to keep our yard up. This article only gives my neighbor another reason to complain. He came over with a cigarette in his hand to complain about my smoke. He don’t live directly behind me he lives across the street behind me and often drives around to my street to make sure it’s us burning before he call, then stand outside and peep and wait for an officer to respond. The problem is only smoke from BLACK Homes bother him. My neighbors can burn when ever they get ready.Where do we stand with this? To say you can never burn again on the property is to harsh. The smoke smells like my fireplace in the winter. He dives around and sit and look at us from the road as if he’s taunting us then go home and stand out and wait for the police to come. The smoke is not even going in his direction. After we cleared the property and he could see who we were he seems to take an intrest in us anytime he’s outside.I could take my alarm out if his intentions were good, because he moniters us well.
