Bridge closure
Motorists traveling around Lufkin’s south side should prepare to use alternate routes to reach their destinations starting next week. On Thursday, July 23, the Southbound Direct Connector Bridge will close.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the closure is required as the contractor, Zachry Construction, reconstructs the U.S. 59 mainlane south of the bridge. Weather permitting, the work is expected to take about two weeks with the bridge re-opening around August 7th.
During the closure, Loop 287 traffic will be required to use the South First Street exit to continue south on U.S. 59. The on-ramp just past El Chico will also re-open to for U.S. 59 southbound traffic.
Caution is advised when traveling through this and all work zones. Remember traffic fines double when workers are present.
