Truck hits U.S. 59 southbound bridge
A truck carrying a piece of heavy equipment struck the U.S. 59 southbound bridge at Loop 287 early Monday afternoon causing major damage to several beams. TxDOT has restricted traffic on the bridge to two lanes until further notice.
TxDOT hopes to let an emergency contract this week to repair the bridge at an estimated cost of $50,000 and hopes to re-open the bridge by the end of January. A contractor recently completed $20,000 in repairs after a truck struck the bridge last summer.
TxDOT District Maintenance crews cleared debris Monday from the roadway to keep the Loop traffic moving. The Lufkin Police Department directed traffic during the clean up.
