Lie to Me

Did anyone watch the new Fox show, “Lie to Me” last night?

I thought it was pretty interesting, but it also made me a bit nervous. I don’t know if I would ALWAYS want to know if someone was telling me a lie.

Would you?

Now I’m going to be more conscious of all my little tics, which to me are normal, but to someone else might be a sign I’m lying about not eating the last cookie. (Which of course I would never do and am thankful no one can see my expressions as I type.)

Tickets still available to Imago Theatre’s Frogz!

IMAGO THEATRE’S “FROGZ” LEAPS TO LUFKIN STAGE

Angelina Arts Alliance is very “hoppy” to welcome the extraordinarily talented performers of Imago Theatre’s delightful production of Frogz! to the Temple Theater stage on the Angelina College campus, Saturday, January 31st.

In addition to their regular 7:30 p.m. performance (limited seating still available), Frogz! will also present a specially-priced, one-hour matinee at 2:30 p.m. This shorter version of the company’s stage show carries a reduced ticket price of just $5 for kidz and $10 for grownupz, making it a wonderful opportunity for families to experience a highly entertaining live theatrical performance at an economical price.

The matinee will be general seating, with the theater doors opening at 1:45 p.m.

Tickets for the matinee performance may only be purchased in-person at the Temple Theater box office (open weekdays noon-5:30 p.m.). Show sponsor is Angelina Radiation Oncology Associates. Family matinee sponsor is Blevco Resources. Season sponsors are Memorial Health System of East Texas and Temple-Inland.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Imago Theatre was founded nearly 30 years ago by Carol Triffle and Jerry Mouawad. Triffle was a dance student at Portland State University looking for a more theatrically expressive medium, while Mouawad was majoring in drama at the University of Oregon and was seeking a more physical form of theatre. Both of them extensively studied the methods of the late master of movement and mime, Jacques Lecoq. The pair co-created Imago Theatre in the late 70’s, and began performing mask theatre in small communities. Over time, the company has progressed to creating and staging experimental works, original text works, and contemporary adaptations of classics. The performance piece, Frogz!, was developed by the company over several years into a show that has toured to much acclaim, and even played on Broadway.

Describing Frogz! is not an easy thing. Equal parts dance, mime, acrobatics, vaudeville, and mask-play, it is an unusual theatrical menagerie of wonder. Frogz! consists of a family-friendly collection of simple vignettes featuring larger-than-life-size penguins, frogs, lizards, paper bags, glowing strings, and other inanimate objects which cavort and play upon the stage, resulting in a wonderfully madcap revue of illusion, inspired comedy, and fun.

Following both the evening and matinee performances, the audience is invited to stay for a “talk-back” session with the cast members of Frogz!

Tickets are on sale at the Temple Theater box office (weekdays noon-5:30 p.m.). For more information, call 936-633-5454.

February/March Charm sneak peek!

Charm12909cover.jpg

Love is in the air at Charm!

Here’s a sneak peek at the cover of our February/March issue of Charm, photographed by Donna Quarles at The Main Event in Lufkin.

Our cover story features Sam and Billie Slaydon, a Lufkin couple who have been married for 60 years. I interviewed the Slaydons at their home a couple of weeks before Christmas. Their house was beautifully decorated for the season and they were eagerly anticipating a visit from their children and grandchildren.

By the time I left that day I had an invitation to bring my family by for Christmas and a beautiful ebony pen handmade by Sam. And, the next day, Sam delivered a loaf of homemade cranberry bread to my office!

That is just typical of the Slaydons. They are so loving and giving. And because they are humble, they were concerned about seeming boastful in their interview, when in fact they were gracious and inspiring.

Also in this issue are some hints to get a better night’s rest and some yoga moves to start your day off right. Those two features go hand-in-hand to help you feel better and have more energy throughout the day.

And, make sure you check out our story about online social networking. It seems as if everyone I know has joined Facebook recently! Find out more about social networking and why your friends and neighbors are using it.

Speaking of social networking, I have had a few people ask if I was planning to start a Charm Facebook group, and although I’ve toyed with the idea I’ve decided that it would be redundant because of the blog. We get a good amount of visitors to the blog every day, and to view the blog you don’t have to be a member of any specific online network.

There is a bunch more inside this issue of Charm and I can’t wait for you to read it. If you subscribe to the Lufkin Daily News or the Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel you won’t even have to leave your house to get your copy. You can run out in your flannel pjs and fuzzy slippers and enjoy it with your morning breakfast. If you do not receive home delivery, you can find copies at locations around town.

Prayers for the Cook family

We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Zac Cook, who was killed yesterday in a helicopter crash in College Station.

This unexpected tragedy has affected so many people, that it’s obvious he was very well loved.

Our prayers are with you.

A daytripper frame of mind

Today I took about a 40 minute drive to our next Daytripper feature location. It was the perfect day for a day trip. I was full of energy, the sky was as clear as can be (and the most beautiful shade of blue) and the temperature was perfect.

Whenever I go somewhere for Daytripper I prefer to go alone. There’s something about traveling alone to some place you’ve never been, even if it’s just a short drive away. Being alone, I can truly immerse myself in the experience, without the distraction of conversation. And, it forces me to really pay attention to my surroundings and the feelings they inspire.

Today was no exception.

As I headed down Hwy. 69 I opened the sunroof on my car and felt completely exhilarated. I turned on my radio and the first song that came on was the Carpenters song, “Top of the World.” I can’t remember how long it’s been since I last heard that song, years at least, but the first few lyrics perfectly described how I felt at the moment.

I love it when that happens.

“Such a feeling’s comin’ over me,
There is wonder in ‘most everything I see.
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes,
And I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream.”

Gym call

I was driving back from lunch today when I noticed a man out running. I have to admire that kind of dedication. I think cold, gray, drizzly weather like this is too bad to make it to the gym, much less run outdoors.

Speaking of gyms, has anyone been to one today? If so, was it packed?
