From the Tyler Morning Telegraph:
Among Tyler Junior College’s deep receiving corps, Jabroski Smiley was not one of the first names mentioned entering the season.
Instead, the reasons for the high expectations were returning starters Jamaal Johnson and Chris Nalley along with Division I transfer Justin Bell.
But it’s the slight Smiley, listed at 5-7 and a generous 165 pounds, who leads the talented group with 479 receiving yards, 23.9 yards per catch and five touchdowns.

Press release from the Odessa Roughnecks:
The Odessa Roughnecks announced on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 that the organization has signed former Baylor QB/WR, Terrance Parks, for the 2010 season. Parks spent three seasons with the Baylor program (‘04-‘06) before transferring to Tarleton State University for the 2007 season. Parks (6’4”, 245 lbs.) made the transition from quarterback to wide receiver in 2006 while at Baylor. That season he played in six games (started three) registering 26 receptions for 217 yards. Parks averaged 8.3 yards a reception that season along with 36.2 yards receiving a game.
In 2005, Parks appeared in eight games (started six) for the Baylor program. For the season, Parks completed 32-of-71 passes for 324 yards and one touchdown. Parks saw his first action of the season at quarterback against Samford University. In that game he completed 3-of-4 passes for 72 yards and one touchdown while rushing four times for 11 yards. Parks also recorded a career-long 13-yard run versus Samford and his 49-yard touchdown pass was the Bears’ fourth-longest play from scrimmage during the 2005 season.
“Terrance will be one of three quarterbacks competing for the starting position in training camp for the Roughnecks. Following our scouting process, we were very excited about signing Terrance. I believe he has all the tools to become an effective quarterback both throwing and running. Athletically, we see him in a similar way as former Roughnecks quarterback, Jason Johnson. There are many ways that we can utilize him.” stated Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams.
Terrance played in all 11 games for Baylor during the 2004 season and held one start as a redshirt freshman. Terrance held his best game against No.25 Oklahoma State University where he completed 18-of-34 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and rushed for 19 yards. He additionally threw a career long 55-yard touchdown pass to Trent Shelton. Parks finished sixth in the Big 12 Conference in passing efficiency (127.6) and he was voted as the Bears’ Most Improved Player for the 2004 season according to the Baylor Coaching Staff.
Parks is a native of Lufkin, Texas and a former high school teammate of recently signed Roughnecks RB Jorvorskie Lane at Lufkin High School. As a senior at Lufkin, Parks completed 198-of-366 passes for 2,677 yards and 19 touchdowns. Additionally, Parks rushed for 703 yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries in leading the Panthers to a 12-3 record and a trip to the semi-finals of the state playoffs.

Jamarkus McFarland, the all-American defensive tackle from Lufkin, was on the sidelines for the Panthers’ game Saturday against Mesquite.
The Tulsa World had some good things to say about McFarland and one of his favorite teammates:
Against Idaho State, Jamarkus McFarland became the Sooners’ first true freshman to play defensive tackle since Tommie Harris and Dusty Dvoracek in 2001. One of McFarland’s role models has been Gerald McCoy. As good as McCoy is, even he redshirted as a rookie.
“He’s a big role model to me,” McFarland said. “I mean, you don’t want to admit to someone, ‘Oh, I look up to you,’ but he’s a real big role model to me.”

From The Missourian:
Missouri’s Gilbert Moye says he’s happy following his move from safety to running back. Such a big change might require a serious adjustment for a lot of players, but this isn’t new for Moye.
“Smooth transition, man,” the sophomore said.

Former Angelina College pitcher Clay Buchholz is back in fine form, according to the Boston Herald:
Taking another step toward establishing himself as a full-time member of the starting rotation for now and a long time to come, Buchholz easily outdueled Roy Halladay in his third straight marquee matchup to lead the Red Sox [team stats] to a 6-1 victory against the Blue Jays.
Fresh off consecutive shutout losses to the Yankees’ CC Sabathia and Tigers’ Justin Verlander, Buchholz finished running the gauntlet of the AL’s best starters by vanquishing the man many consider the best.
“It’s always fun going against the other team’s best pitcher,” Buchholz said. “If you want to succeed in this game, you’ve got to do it against the guys who are the best in the game, and he’s definitely in that category.”

From The Plain Dealer in Cleveland:
Browns guard Rex Hadnot has suffered a torn left medial collateral ligament, which means he could be back a lot sooner than originally thought, a league source with knowledge of the situation said.
Depending on the severity of the tear, torn MCLs are often a 4-6 week injury. When Hadnot was carted off the field Thursday, it appeared he may have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which would’ve ended his season.
The loss of Hadnot for the year would’ve been a blow to the line, not only because he was challenging for a starting job at left guard, but because he’s also started 19 games at center.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Veteran lineman Rex Hadnot, who was capable of playing three positions, suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to his left knee on a pass play in team drills.
Hadnot, playing left guard with the second unit, was engaged in a block with defensive end Louis Leonard. Behind Hadnot, left tackle George Foster and linebacker David Veikune were dueling. It appeared Veikune tripped over Foster’s leg and fell on the back of Hadnot’s knee.

From the Toronto Star:
The other receiver back in the picture is Reggie McNeal, who didn’t dress for Saturday’s turnover-filled loss to Winnipeg after being relegated to backup status for dropping too many passes.
But Andrus is convinced a week on the sidelines has done the job for the team’s leading receiver.
“Reggie handled it as well as anybody I’ve ever seen handle that,” Andrus said. “He was very professional. He was on the sidelines. He was cheering his teammates on. He practised harder the whole week.”

Good story at Packers.com on Diboll product Jermichael Finley, who has a year under his belt with the Green Bay Packers:
“Last year it was all just overwhelming with everything I was getting thrown in and thrown at,” Finley said. “This year I’m comfortable. I used to go into the huddle looking at ‘A-Rod’ with 8-ball eyes. This year I’m real relaxed and real comfortable, so I’m ready.”

From the Victoria Advocate:
Blake Ford was only a spot starter for Lamar University, but he’s making a strong case to be included in the Cardinals’ rotation next season.
Ford pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Victoria Generals to a 5-0 win over the Brazos Valley Bombers on Thursday night at Riverside Stadium.
“I had about four starts and some mid-relief and that was it,” Ford said of his sophomore season. “I actually never threw more than three innings in one ballgame for Lamar. It feels to go out and do that.”

Hudson’s Brandon Belt is helping the Texas Longhorns continue their run through the playoffs, with a big game at the College World Series. He went 2-for-4 with a key two-run single in the Longhorns’ 10-6 come-from-behind win over Arizona State on Tuesday.
And he made a big play on defense, according to Omaha.com:
Did you see that? Texas first baseman Brandon Belt denied Jared McDonald a seventh-inning hit with a dive that snared McDonald’s hot smash to his right. Belt scrambled to his feet and underhanded the ball to Jungmann for the out.
