Finley recalls OU game
Packers.com has a feature called “The Game I’ll Never Forget.” Jermichael Finley recalls the UT-OU game:
According to Finley, the big plays were all about taking advantage of a matchup the Longhorns were looking for.
“They put me on a linebacker, and when I saw the linebacker on me, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to beat this guy,’” he said. “That’s all it took to get the ball over the top, and that’s how I got the 50-yarder both times.”
Finley added that he and McCoy anticipated the linebacker matchup and were prepared to exploit it.
“Every team going against their rival, you practice way harder during the week, so that’s what we did,” Finley said. “We practiced that play over and over, and in the game it was like a dream.”

Hundreds gather for Kiel’s funeral
The Lufkin Daily News has an excellent story on Terrence Kiel’s funeral:
Lufkin head football coach John Outlaw talked about what an awesome competitor Kiel was.
“He was the only kid I’ve coached in 30 years that I couldn’t let practice,” Outlaw said. “Once he was on the field he had no friends. I’d have to yell at him, ‘Terrence, get off the field.’ He’d give me a stare and I’d have to tell him, ‘You can’t stay out there, you’ll hurt somebody.’”
Kiel was part of the class of 1999 at Lufkin, and Outlaw said he was part of the group that put Panther football on the map.

Kiel death

Bill Alsup for SignOnSanDiego.com
I’ve been out for a few days so I’m just now catching up with this blog. Here are the major stories on the Terrence Kiel death:
The original San Diego Union-Tribune story.
The Union-Tribune has a story up today about how Kiel’s friends tried to lift the car off of him:
When they discovered that he was pinned underneath, they tried to lift his 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo sedan. An off-duty police officer took control until firefighters arrived.
“They seemed a little distraught that they couldn’t do more,” said Bill Alsup, who called 911 and then watched the scene on Stonebridge Parkway just outside his backyard.
Tim Sullivan of the Union-Tribune has a pretty somber memorial column of Kiel:
In a sport driven by performance and obsessed with appearances, the bottom line on Terrence Kiel was that he wasn’t worth the headaches.
“Obviously, Terrence has made what I would view as judgment errors,” former Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer said yesterday. “(But) he was a good player and a good person with us.
“He was a player who at times didn’t react as quickly as you’d like, but once he was sure, he was a terrific player. When he knew where he was going, he went full speed and was a powerful young man. He was a solid player. It’s tragic.”

Lane: McFarland the ‘real deal’
The New York Times News Service has a story on Lufkin recruit Jamarkus McFarland and the national attention he has received. Jorvorskie Lane is interviewed about him:
After class, he met the Texas A&M senior fullback Jorvorskie Lane at Lufkin High’s indoor practice center.
During their hour-long workout in temperatures over 90 degrees, both players wore long-sleeve plastic shirts under sweatshirts and perspired streams of sweat.
The two keep in contact through text messages. Lane, a Lufkin High graduate, has not pushed McFarland to attend Texas A&M and has instead encouraged him to make his own decision.
“He’s the real deal,” Lane said of McFarland. “He’s a good student. I’m proud of him. People should be on the watch for him.”
