JV Lane is already one of the premier running backs because of his sheer size and power, but I think he could reach Heisman quality and be a first round draft choice by losing some of that weight.

Imagine all that size and power combined with the

Musick continues to struggle

Wes Musick, after a great start to the season, struggled for the fourth straight start, giving up four runs in four innings, in Houston’s 13-6 loss to Rice, according to The Houston Chronicle:

Musick wiggled his way out of trouble in the bottom of the first, inducing an inning-ending double-play grounder from Adam Zornes after loading the bases with one out. Musick wasn’t so fortunate in the third, surrendering a two-run double to Rick Hague and run-scoring singles to Aaron Luna and Diego Seastrunk as the Owls forged a 4-1 lead.

The bottom fell out on Musick in the fourth, as Luna, Seastrunk, Chad Mozingo and Jimmy Comerota recorded two-out RBIs. Rice totaled nine hits in the third and fourth.

“We watched a lot of tape on him, and he likes to throw the fastball and changeup out,” said Luna, who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

“We were real disciplined at the plate, and once we started getting some people on base, we really started to get a few things going and rattled him a little bit. He’s a great pitcher, but he had one of those off nights.”

Tullos named to All-SLC first team

Jessica Tullos was one of four Ladyjacks named to the All-SLC squad, according to CSTV.com:

Like Covington with the pitching staff, Tullos helped lead a resurgence by the Ladyjacks at the plate. Her .338 batting average is a career-high and ranks second on the team, helping take SFA from the No. 9 offensive team in the league in 2007 to the conference’s second-best hitting squad in 2008. Tullos leads the Ladyjacks in home runs and set a new single-season school record with her 10 long balls this season. Her 10th homer of the year was also her 22nd career blast, making her the all-time leader in career home runs at SFA. Wednesday’s SLC honor is the first of Tullos’ career.

Two more stories on Finley

The Associated Press has a story on Jermichael Finley and his opportunity for playing time:

While the Packers haven’t told Finley about his chances of playing right away, they didn’t have to.

“They’re not really telling me anything. They’re just telling me to go out and work hard,” said Finley, who came out of Texas following a redshirt sophomore season in which he caught 45 passes for 575 yards and two touchdowns. “(But) looking at the tight end position, I’ve got a big chance of coming in and playing.”

Scout.com talks about his whirlwind four months:

In January, the athletic tight end made a life-changing decision when he told University of Texas coach Mack Brown he was turning pro, despite completing just his redshirt sophomore season.

About the same time, his then-girlfriend gave birth to the couple’s first child, a boy named Kaydon.

Last month, Finley, who fathered one other child, turned the landmark age of 21.

Three weeks ago, he got married.

Belt has perfect day at the plate in win over Baylor

Brandon Belt went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, according to The Austin American-Statesman:

The Longhorns’ first baseman has struggled throughout the Big 12 schedule, but not on Friday.

Belt was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

“It’s about time,” he said. “I’ve been battling my butt off for the past couple of weeks and hitting the ball hard, but they’ve been catching it. I thought maybe I would try a little something different, hit it a little softer and maybe it would drop in.”

Finley at minicamp

4366aa85adf6493db9e5580933c.jpg

The Associated Press

The Wisconsin State Journal and The Green Bay Press Gazette have some stories on the new Green Bay tight ends, who started rookie mini-camp today. This from the Journal:

Finley admitted before practice to keeping an eye on the tight ends on the Packers’ roster after the team expressed an interest in him at the scouting combine in Indianapolis in February.

Although the Packers added two undrafted tight ends after the draft, Finley could be the team’s No. 2 tight end in September.

While the Packers haven’t told Finley about his odds of playing right away, they didn’t have to.

“They’re not really telling me anything. They’re just telling me to go out and work hard,” said Finley, who came out of Texas following his redshirt sophomore season, during which he caught 45 passes for 575 yards and two touchdowns. “(But) looking at the tight end position, I’ve got a big chance of coming in and playing.”

And the Gazette:

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Finley might be raw, young and a bit on the lean side. But on the first day rookies took to the practice field inside The Don Hutson Center, he stood out by looking light on his feet and making a few tough catches.

“Very, very happy with Jermichael and the two other young guys,” McCarthy said after practice. “It’s a group that I think we’ve done a very good job tailoring the athlete to what we’re asking them to do. We’ve made some adjustments with the tight end position as far as what their primary and secondary responsibilities are. We’ve gone to a more pure, athletic tight end, and I think we’ve got a good group to work with.”

Musick to open series against Memphis

From CSTV.com:

Sophomore southpaw Wes Musick will make his 11th consecutive weekend start during the series opener against Conference USA-rival Memphis on Friday. This season, the Lufkin native has posted a 7-3 record with 57 strikeouts and a 3.92 ERA in 64.1 innings.

He leads all Cougar hurlers in wins, ERA, starts, innings pitched and strikeouts and leads all C-USA hurlers with his win total.

In his last game, Musick dropped his second straight start after giving up six runs off seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings. The outing was his shortest against a C-USA opponent during his career.

Friday’s game will be Musick’s second career start against the Tigers. In his only previous outing, he allowed six runs (five earned) off nine hits and four walks with a strikeout in five innings but did not collect a decision as Memphis claimed a 16-10 win during the middle game of the series on May 12, 2007.
