Jermichael Finley says he’s relaxed and ready
Good story at Packers.com on Diboll product Jermichael Finley, who has a year under his belt with the Green Bay Packers:
“Last year it was all just overwhelming with everything I was getting thrown in and thrown at,” Finley said. “This year I’m comfortable. I used to go into the huddle looking at ‘A-Rod’ with 8-ball eyes. This year I’m real relaxed and real comfortable, so I’m ready.”

Blake Ford throws three-hit shutout in summer collegiate league
From the Victoria Advocate:
Blake Ford was only a spot starter for Lamar University, but he’s making a strong case to be included in the Cardinals’ rotation next season. Ford pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Victoria Generals to a 5-0 win over the Brazos Valley Bombers on Thursday night at Riverside Stadium. “I had about four starts and some mid-relief and that was it,” Ford said of his sophomore season. “I actually never threw more than three innings in one ballgame for Lamar. It feels to go out and do that.”

Belt goes 2-for-4, makes key defensive play in Longhorns’ big comeback win
Hudson’s Brandon Belt is helping the Texas Longhorns continue their run through the playoffs, with a big game at the College World Series. He went 2-for-4 with a key two-run single in the Longhorns’ 10-6 come-from-behind win over Arizona State on Tuesday.
And he made a big play on defense, according to Omaha.com:
Did you see that? Texas first baseman Brandon Belt denied Jared McDonald a seventh-inning hit with a dive that snared McDonald’s hot smash to his right. Belt scrambled to his feet and underhanded the ball to Jungmann for the out.

Hearne back in Corpus Christi
Former Lufkin Panther pitcher Trey Hearne made a splash in his return to the Corpus Christi baseball scene:
Hearne pitched five innings, allowing just two runs off of six hits, but most importantly he did this. Announcer: “And here is the 0-1. This time he is swinging away and here’s the high fly ball, well hit deep left field inside the foul pole, Trey Hearne with a three-run home run. A no-doubt-about-it shot from the pitcher, Trey Hearne.” Hearne told KRIS 6 Sports, “It’s been fun getting back. I had a lot of guys that I played with over the years that were here last night. My family was here so it was a lot of fun. It was like coming home.”

Belt, Musick doing their thing in conference tourneys
Brandon Belt and Wes Musick, who used to make for a super 1-2 punch on the mound for the Hudson Hornets, are both doing well in their respective conference baseball tournaments.
Belt got the Texas Longhorns going early in their 9-3 win over Kansas, according to the Austin American-Statesman:
Brandon Belt, who is making a push to be named the tournament MVP, hit a two-run homer to right field in the first inning. But it was Cameron Rupp’s at-bat in the fourth inning that really put the game away.
Musick kept the University of Houston alive with a 4-1 win over Marshall, according to the Houston Chronicle:
UH starter Wes Musick and relievers Chase Dempsey and Joseph teamed up to hold Marshall in check. “Our pitching was superb today,” Noble said. “Marshall can really swing the bat, and our guys shut them down.”

Clay Buchholz is tearing up Triple A, but there’s no room for him in Boston
From the Boston Globe:
How much more can he do? Clay Buchholz has been out of control on the mound lately, in a good way. Buchholz struck out 11 batters over eight scoreless innings in this morning’s start against Toledo. He allowed just four hits in his outing, and walked no one. Buchholz now has a 1.03 ERA in six starts over 35 innings. He’s allowed just 16 hits and four earned runs with 37 strikeouts and 10 walks. Batters are hitting .130 against him. Over his last 20 1/3 innings, Buchholz hasn’t allowed a run, and has struck out 25 batters. But there’s also no spot for him in the rotation at the moment, despite the fact that the Sox starters are at the bottom of the American League in ERA.

Allison McClain introduces herself as she says goodbye
From Allison’s final blog entry at www.gocentenary.com:
In Saturday’s game and after an already clinched Summit League tournament berth, we came out very relaxed. Without several starters in the lineup due to an injury, again, the defense played a little different. With Lauren on the mound, we were able to score early after Caitlin led off with a homerun. After having a 3-0 lead in the first, we kept building on a successful day at the plate, scoring eight runs and holding the Bison to just four. It was a bittersweet ending for the seniors in their last regular season game to come away with a win. I personally walked away with a feeling of excitement, yet an understanding that my softball career was coming to an end—for good.

Lufkin’s Ray shines in major league debut
From CBCsports.ca:
Rookie Robert Ray made his major league debut, starting the game on the mound for Toronto. He was effective in 5 2/3 innings of work, giving up three runs off four hits. He walked four batters, which is likely why manager Cito Gaston didn’t hesitate to pull him, rather than letting him pitch through the sixth inning. Ray left the field to a loud ovation from the Rogers Centre crowd and received plenty of congratulations from his teammates. “He did a great job. He looked comfortable and he was really pounding the strike zone.” Hill said. “I look forward to his next start.”
